Yearning for spring

Spring is here and with it the compulsion to leave winter behind and create something fresh and new. The desire to shed winter clothing: boots, sweaters, scarfs—ugh! Enough already! We want a new look, something clean and uplifting to bring joy and fun back into our lives. These sentiments are integral to the brand new Swans Island Spring into Summer Throw. It contains all of these impulses and wrangles them into a punchy, colorful handwoven throw blanket.

After Maine’s long, dark and cold winters, spring’s colorful arrival is always eagerly anticipated.

How did it come to be?

We actually got the idea for this in January when we were smack dab in the middle of a real old-fashioned Maine winter. One unseasonably warm day visions of flowers and growth started popping into our heads. A staff meeting was held. Did anyone have a design in mind to capture this feeling? Immediately a hand shot up. Riley Smith—our resident dyer, not to mention weaver and shipper—had been envisioning colors interacting in new and interesting ways.

A conversation ensued and a plan was hatched

A design evolved that included a multitude of colors in the warp crossing with a multitude of colors in the weft. When our production manager saw this he brought up the point that it would take forever and a day to weave this design. Couldn’t the design include fewer than 21 unique colors?

With the characteristic exuberance of a creative, Riley’s reply was, “ Well it’s not my fault flowers come in so many colors!” And as often happens at Swans Island, that sentiment appears to have carried the day!

The Swans Island 2025 “Spring Into Summer” Limited Edition Throw

This beautiful throw is handcrafted in Maine, features a delicate plaid design inspired by the soft, vibrant hues of perennial flowers. Soft undyed organic merino wool forms the base. Subtle shades of lavender, blush pink, buttery yellow, and fresh green weaver together to create a serene, timeless pattern.

• The Swans Island 2025 Limited Edition “Spring Into Summer” Throws are woven by various members of the Swans Island weaving team.
• There are twenty-one colors in each throw.
• The yarns used to make these throws are all hand-dyed in our Maine studio.
• Each throw is a unique handwoven textile.
• Each throw incorporates three kinds of Swans Island hand-dyed yarn:
  • Natural Color (100% Certified organic Merino wool)
  • Firefly (100% Certified organic Merino wool, tie-dyed)
  • All American Sport  (100% American Rambouillet wool)
