At Swans Island Company, we believe in keeping it simple.

Pure fibers, time-honored processes, and a commitment to fine craftsmanship are at the heart of everything we do.
Since 1992, we have produced the fine handwoven textiles here on the coast of Maine. We are proud to carry on this tradition of fine American craftsmanship today.

Tradition

Swans Island Company's Island Collection throws, blankets and scarves are handwoven in Maine with wool from Maine island sheep. This ram is one of the flock on Vinalhaven, Maine.
Swans Island Company's Island Collection is handwoven in Northport, Maine using single-origin wool from Longcove Farm on Vinalhaven Island, Maine. Shown here, raw fleece and yarn spun from the undyed brown and white fleece.

All Swans Island Company goods begin with natural fibers, sourced to the highest possible standard.

Some of our wool comes from local and regional family-run farms that have been caring for their flocks for generations. Fleece from those farms is custom spun for us in Vermont on trusty vintage machinery. Our organic merino fleece is spun for us in Maine.  This fiber comes from South America and is certified by the Global Organic Textile Standard, the world’s leading processing standard for textiles made from organic fibers.

From there, every skein of Swans Island yarn is dyed by hand in our Northport dye house. This allows us to create uniquely saturated colorways that can’t be achieved in large-scale dye lots.  Many of colors come from naturally derived pigments like cochineal, indigo, and madder root. Others are created with low-impact dyes to achieve our singular depth of color while also reducing our water and energy usage. We make each color with our own recipes, expertly developed to achieve our unique variegated tones.

In an era of automation and disposable goods, our Northport studios remain committed to traditional craft. You’ll find vintage hand looms operated by our skilled weaving team.  Large, steaming dye vats hold skeins of hand-dyed yarn. The precise work of hand-monogramming and skillful blanket repair are carried out upstairs in our finishing room. It’s not the fastest way to make anything, but it’s honest, and made with a deep respect for process.

Our signature handwoven blankets and throws are inspired by the rich history of textile manufacturing in New England. In 1996, Swans Island blankets were awarded the prestigious Smithsonian Blue Ribbon for Craft. Thirty years later, we remain committed to the principle of upholding American craft traditions.

We are also proud to collaborate with other domestic mills in the production of our knit apparel and other collections of blankets. Our production partners are experts in their field – small family-run businesses whose high standards for quality and sustainability match our own.
